Project Information
Through the San Francisco Recreation and Parks, the Bureau of Architecture was retained to prepare an existing assessment study and conceptual design program for the Junipero Serra Playground at 300 Stonecrest Drive. The study was an assessment of the one story clubhouse and grounds along with recommendations for building and site improvements, including accessibility for persons with disabilities. The Recreation and Parks accepted and approved the conceptual program and it became the basis for a capital improvement project.
Junipero Serra Playground first opened on January 18, 1955 on the 1.5 acre lot located in the Lakeside neighborhood. The neighborhood is comprised of single family homes. The facility is within easy access of public transportation.
The clubhouse at Junipero Serra Playground is heavily used, primarily by nearby residents in the Lakeside neighborhood. The clubhouse offers one of the most active children's programs in the City, including a Tiny Tots program, children's gym, and a Latch Key program. The multi-purpose room is used for regular community meetings, children’s art and crafts programs, ceramic classes, and the 50+ social club. It is also frequently rented for parties and meetings by the community.
This project work scope included accessibility improvements to the entire site and the entry ways to all the courts, to the playground, and building. The playground and equipment were replaced to provide access for children with disabilities. The clubhouse was replaced with a new 1,700 square feet building; which included new rooms and amenities. Extra storage space was also added throughout the building to accommodate the needs for each program and function.
