APWA Award for Sunnyside Conservatory
In February, 2010 DPW's BOA team received the Project of the year Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA), Northern California Chapter, in the less than $5 million category of Historical Restoration/Preservation, for the Sunnyside Conservatory Renovation Project.
The award represents outstanding contributions to public works in Northern California and was officially announced at the February 25th, 2010 Northern California Chapter luncheon where the winners gave a presentation of their project work.
Project Information
The intention of the renovation to the Sunnyside Conservatory was to preserve and restore the historic character of the building and garden of this unique neighborhood park. The Conservatory was constructed in 1891 and was designated San Francisco Landmark No. 78 in 1975. The renovation work included upgrades per code requirements and the replacement of materials due to deterioration and per restoration with the construction techniques and craftsmanship of the period when it was originally built. The renovation specifically preserved the configuration of the historic building, window openings, interior arched wood trusses, pitched roof and other architectural details.
With feedback from the community, key stakeholders, and the Recreation and Park Department, the project team was able to resurrect this gem while maintaining its original look and design. Old growth recycled lumber was used for the frame and insulated windows were installed to maximize natural sunlight and ventilation. The team also built an accessibility ramp, installed new landscaping and artwork, upgraded the facility's electrical and ventilation systems, and added other modern features to ensure the facility met current codes and standards. A big component of this project was the preservation of the plants and trees. The Sunnyside Conservatory is now open; allowing the public to gain full use of all it has to offer including use for outdoor education programs and cultural activities.
